RICS foray in education through the RICS School of Built environment, Amity University, Noida has grown from strength to strength and now has close to 1,500 students studying full time undergraduate and post graduate programs in real estate, construction management, quantity surveying and infrastructure management. The school recently announced the launch of its second campus in the country in Mumbai to be headed by industry veteran and a multifaceted leader, Prof. Jagdish Math. Math has worked on diverse roles and provided leadership for large, hyper-growth premier companies, government organizations and, research and education institutions.
In this interview Math talks about the newly launched campus, the courses on offer and the efforts the university is taking to bridge the skills gap in the built environment space.
Q: Congratulations on the launch of the Mumbai campus of RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University. Was Mumbai the natural choice for a second campus in the country after Noida?
It certainly was. Mumbai Metropolitan Region
is one of the most populous urban regions
in the world and the second most populous metropolitan area
in India, with a population of 20.7 million as of 2011.
Mumbai is the financial capital of India and is the most expensive real estate market in the country. The real estate industry was looking for an industry-led academic institution to fulfil the growing demand for built environment professionals in Mumbai and South India. We hope to meet this demand through our students.
Q: What are the courses on offer at the Mumbai campus?
We will offer three key programs in Mumbai-MBA (Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure), MBA (Construction Project Management) and BBA (Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure). Over a period of time, we will add more programs such as MBA (Construction Economics and Quantity Surveying), MBA (Infrastructure Management), Diploma (Facilities Management). We also plan to offer a B.Tech in Construction Engineering Management. This program will give diploma engineers a good career option in the Built Environment space.
Q: Will we see a change in the curriculum for the Mumbai campus. Will it be tweaked for the West/South Indian market?
The programs and course curriculum for Noida and Mumbai would be mostly similar and aligned with our School of Built Environment vision, mission and ethos. Any additions / modifications shall be done based on the feedback from prospective employers, experts and faculty.
Q: Are admissions open for the first batch?
Yes they are. Admissions for the Mumbai campus opened in December first week and we have received very good response especially for the MBA (Construction Project Management) & MBA (Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure).
Q: How many students are you expecting in the first batch?
We expect 60 students each for MBA (Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure) and MBA (Construction Project Management), and 45 for BBA (Real Estate and Urban Infrastructure).
Q: What is the typical profile of the students who have applied for these courses?
I would say a majority of the students who have applied so far are engineering and architecture graduates. These students typically apply for all the programs. The commerce graduates generally apply for Real Estate programs.
Q: Are we seeing interest from girl students as well?
Yes. A good number of girl students have shown interest in the programs.
Q: What is the course fee?
Our MBA fee is Rs.2.15 lakh per semester and BBA is Rs.1.15 lakh per semester
Q: Do you offer scholarship to students?
We do offer scholarship both at our Noida and Mumbai campus. We believe in rewarding hard work and excellence of meritorious students. In addition to our regular scholarship, we offer special scholarships for meritorious girl students.
Q: The real estate and construction sector faces a huge shortage in skilled personnel. How will the industry benefit from the courses you offer? Will it help in bridging the skills gap?
RICS School of Built Environment was set up with the idea of producing job ready graduates. The school is an industry led academic institution supported by leading real estate, construction and infrastructure firms. We train students in different aspects of the built environment space and equip them with key skills such as managerial/business skills, values and ethics. I would say the industry benefits greatly from our courses because our students are employment ready from the day they enter the industry. We have been providing a steady supply of skilled personnel to the industry and we hope this helps in bridging the skills gap.
